A non-agentic AI tool takes an input and produces an output: summarize this transcript, draft this reply, classify this intent. A human reviews and acts on the result. An agentic AI system is designed to take the next step itself — call a tool, query a system, take an action, observe the result, and decide what to do next — chaining multiple steps together toward a goal with reduced human intervention between steps. The technical shift is from "generate a response" to "pursue an objective," which is a meaningfully different (and meaningfully harder to govern) capability.
Why the term is everywhere in CX marketing right now
As of 2026, "agentic AI" has become a near-universal headline term across contact-center and customer-experience vendors — used as a category label by a large majority of major CCaaS and CX platforms in their top-level marketing. That ubiquity is itself informative: when nearly every vendor in a category claims the identical term as a differentiator, the term has stopped functioning as a differentiator and become a category-wide claim that requires scrutiny rather than acceptance at face value.
What to actually ask when a vendor says "agentic"
The term describes a spectrum, not a single capability, and vendors use it inconsistently. Useful questions: What specific actions can the system take autonomously, and which require human approval first? What tools or systems can it call without a human in the loop? What happens when it makes an incorrect decision mid-sequence — is there a rollback, a review checkpoint, or does the error propagate? A vendor that cannot answer these concretely is likely using "agentic" as a marketing adjective rather than describing a specific architecture.
Where Voz360 stands, and why
Voz360 does not currently market itself using the term "agentic AI." Its shipped AI capabilities today are Answer Engine (rule-based decision-tree and FAQ bots that resolve repeatable customer questions across chat, voice IVR, and messaging) and Context Retrieval (vector-embedding-based knowledge search that surfaces relevant approved content to a human agent in real time) — both of which are assistive or rule-based, not autonomous multi-step action-taking systems in the sense described above. Generative agent-assist, named Assist, is on Voz360’s near-term roadmap and is described as a roadmap item, not a shipped capability. This is a deliberate positioning choice, not an evasion: with the term used near-universally as a headline claim across the category, and Voz360’s actual shipped capability being rule-based and retrieval-based rather than autonomous action-taking, using "agentic" to describe today’s product would overstate what it does. Voz360 would rather name its capabilities precisely — shipped vs. roadmap, rule-based vs. generative — than adopt a term it cannot currently back with a matching architecture.
A definition a buyer can actually use
When evaluating any vendor’s "agentic AI" claim, a workable definition to hold them to is: does the system autonomously decide on and execute a sequence of actions across multiple steps or systems, with materially less human intervention than a single generate-and-review interaction? If what is being described is a single language-model response, however well it is generated, that is generative AI or assistive AI — a real and useful capability, but not what "agentic" technically means.
Can the vendor tell you — in one sentence — which of their AI capabilities are rule-based, which are generative, and which are still roadmap?
