That ubiquity is itself informative: when nearly every vendor in a category claims the identical term as a differentiator, the term has stopped functioning as a differentiator and become a category-wide claim that requires scrutiny rather than acceptance at face value.

What to actually ask when a vendor says "agentic"

The term describes a spectrum, not a single capability, and vendors use it inconsistently. Useful questions: What specific actions can the system take autonomously, and which require human approval first? What tools or systems can it call without a human in the loop? What happens when it makes an incorrect decision mid-sequence — is there a rollback, a review checkpoint, or does the error propagate? A vendor that cannot answer these concretely is likely using "agentic" as a marketing adjective rather than describing a specific architecture.
